An Educational Resource for Parents and Caregivers
If you speak to parents even before their child is born, you will invariably hear, ‘I just want them to be healthy’. Of course we do. We want them to be healthy, we want them to reach their full potential, we want them to be bright and bold and brilliant. We want to do our best for them and help them to grow and develop.
But how do we achieve this? What information do we use? Who do we talk to? What do we read? What’s the ‘right’ way? Is there a ‘right’ way?!
We have a fear as parents that it’s all in our hands. Who our children become and what they achieve in their life is completely down to us. It can make us feel lost, out of touch with our gut feelings, or simply like it’s all just pot-luck.
The NCD team believe that we’re actually at a very fortunate point in our history. The last decade has given us new technology and new ways of looking at the brain. Recent evidence from neuroscience, developmental psychology, biochemistry, and education research have transformed what we know about infants, children and growing brains. It’s shown us that there are key areas that are crucial to allow our children to develop their full potential. If we add this to what we know about development from evolution – how we’ve been built, what types of conditions we’re wired to expect when we’re born, and how we learn, then we have a simple template from which to work as parents and educators.
